Study Regulations - GeneralParent-students are faced with the task of planning and organizing their studies in compatibility with their family responsibilities.There is no general way but only individual solutions to meet the situation. This challenge can be mastered with the proper counselling and support.Below you will find contact persons for the respective universities that can give you information on university-related information and on organisational univresity framework:

Exeat
You have the possibility to take a leave from your studies. You should apply within the registration period for the following semester. The exeat semesters are not subtracted from the main course of studies.
The State Higher Education Act in the current version states in § 61 Beurlaubung thatt:

- Students can apply for an exeat semester only in special cases. The duration of the exeat should not exceed two semesters.
- 2. Students on exeat are not permitted to participate in student government of the university. They are not permitted to attend lectures or to use the other facilities of the university except the ones under § 28 (Information centre).
- 3. Students can apply for an exeat in accordance with
- § 3 paragraph 1 of the Law on the protection of the working mother (Maternity Protection Act - Maternity Protection Act),
- § 6 para. 1 of the Law on the protection of working mothers in the version published on 20 June 2002 (BGBl. I S. 2318) in its current version
- and a parental leave in accordance with § 15 para. 1 to 3 of the Federal Parental Benefit and Parental Leave Law of 5 December 2006 (BGBl. I S. 2748) in its current version.

Maternity and Parental Leave
The Landeshochschulgesetz § 34 on Exams states that the examination regulations must provide protection provision in accordance with the Maternity Protection Act, as well as the limits of the legal provisions on parental leave and provide flexible deadlines.Information on how the universities implemented these requirements can be found under Study Regulations at Universities.
Examination Deadlines
All universities have published guidelines on extended examination deadlines, especially for students with children, usually in the Curriculum and Examination Regulations. You will find further information under Study Regulations at Universities.

Maternity and parental leave
The information on maternity and parental leave is mentioned in the general section of the Curriculum and Examination Regulations of the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences. Paragraph (7) of § 6 on Revocation of Admission, Revocation of Right to Examination; Deadlines, states that the period of maternity leave are to be considered accordingly to the Maternity Protection Act, the period of maternity leave will not be deducted from the period according to the Examination Regulations, the limit for parental leave has to be considered in accordance with the law on granting child-rearing allowance and parental leave (BErzGG). Candidates must inform the Examinations Office in writing at least four weeks before they wish to take parental leave, enclosing the evidence required, for which period(s) they wish to take parental leave. The Examination Committee must check whether the legal requirements are satisfied which would lead to an employee being entitled to parental leave according to the law on child-rearing allowance and parental leave and informs the candidate without delay about the results and the resultant revised examination deadlines. The deadlines involved in a Master's thesis cannot be interrupted by parental leave. The topic given counts as not set. After parental leave has expired the candidate will be given a new topic.Examination Deadlines

These deadlines are implemented in the general section of the Curriculum and Examination Regulations of the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences as following: Paragraph (7) of § 6 on Revocation of Admission, Revocation of Right to Examination; Deadlines, states that any students, who is living in the same household with a child under age 10 or have to look after family member in need of care, is entitled to complete individual graded examinations and university exams after the deadlines provided by the Examination Regulations. The same applies for the completion of non-graded examinations. Deadlines for retake exams and fixed examinations can be extended by no more than two semesters. The entitlement expires at the end of the semester, as the conditions referred to in the 1st clause are eliminated completely or partially. The deadline for the termination of the examination entitlement under Paragraph 3 and 4 begins with the termination of entitlement. The student has to carry out the relevant evidence, and he is obliged to notify changes in the conditions immediately.Exeat
