Solidarity project: 9,200 euros for clean energy for hospitals in Africa

19.05.2025
Over the past few semesters, guests of the Studierendenwerk Karlsruhe have collected 25 cents with every solidarity meal and 10 cents with every solidarity muffin for a MISEREOR project that supports hospitals in Africa with their electricity supply.

Michael Postert, Managing Director of the Studierendenwerk Karlsruhe, has now handed over the proceeds totalling EUR 9,200 to MISEREOR.

Solidarity project: 9,200 euros for clean energy for hospitals in Africa
For more than 20 years now, the Studierendenwerk Karlsruhe, the Protestant Student Community (ESG) and the Catholic University Community (KHG) have been supporting social projects around the world with solidarity meals and solidarity muffins. ‘The solidarity meal, which changes every week, is always vegetarian and costs 2.55 euros for our student guests, of which 25 cents automatically goes to the respective solidarity project,’ explained Postert. The solidarity meal is always offered on Thursdays on line 3 of the Mensa am Adenauerring (Adenauerring 7, KA) in the Mensa Moltke (KA) and in the Mensa Tiefenbronnerstraße in Pforzheim. The ‘Solimuffins’ are available in all Studierendenwerk cafeterias from Monday to Friday.

Together with partners ESG and KHG, a ‘Bread for the World’ project has now been selected for the current summer semester and the coming winter semester, which supports fair lithium mining in Bolivia. The motto of the new solidarity project is ‘Battery empty? Recharge yourself and the world!’. The salt lake of Uyuni (Bolivia) is home to gigantic lithium deposits - almost a quarter of all global resources. Due to its high conductivity, lithium is considered an important raw material for the energy transition. The light metal forms the basis for high-performance batteries in electric cars, smartphones and solar power storage systems. However, its planned extraction could have catastrophic consequences for people and nature. A partner organisation of Bread for the World is educating local people. Lithium mining offers opportunities - but only if the profits remain in the region and the environment is protected.
