Student accommodation: New hall of residence built by the Karlsruhe Student Union creates 69 additional places to live

06.11.2025
Karlsruhe gets urgently needed student accommodation: On Monday, 3 November, the first residents moved into the new student residence of the Karlsruhe Student Union at Rintheimer Querallee 2c, directly on the East Campus of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). A total of 69 modern and affordable living spaces are now available – an important step for the university city of Karlsruhe in easing the burden on students and making studying more attractive.
The renovation and conversion of the listed Mackensen Barracks was carried out by GSP Architects from Munich. A good third of the total cost of the conversion was covered by subsidies totalling 3.795 million euros from the federal-state programme ‘Junges Wohnen’ (Young Living) and funds from the state of Baden-Württemberg. In this way, the federal and state governments are jointly investing in affordable housing for students and trainees.
However, the students themselves are making a decisive contribution to the realisation of the project: with a designated contribution of 7 euros per semester, they are supporting not only the conversion of the former barracks on the East Campus until the summer semester of 2045, but also the planned new building, which will be constructed directly next to the barracks.
The students deserve the highest praise for their solidarity and personal commitment – without their active participation, the entire project would not have been possible.
With the new hall of residence at Rintheimer Querallee 2c, the Karlsruhe Student Union is expanding its range of affordable student accommodation and sending a strong signal for an attractive, supportive and liveable student environment in Karlsruhe.
