Network “Family in Higher Education”

The “Familie in der Hochschule” (FidH) association is an initiative of more than 150 universities, university-affiliated institutions, and research organizations from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. By signing the “Familie in der Hochschule” charter, members commit to implementing and sustainably embedding the compatibility of academic studies, careers, and family responsibilities.

The Karlsruhe Student Services Organization is expanding its work in the area of family life on college campuses. On April 23, Executive Director Michael Postert accepted the “Family in Higher Education” charter on the campus of Johannes Gutenberg University. Balancing work, studies, and family life is important for both staff members and students in the higher education environment. Following the Munich Student Services Organization and AKAFOE Bochum, Karlsruhe is the third student services organization in the FidH.

The Karlsruhe Student Services Organization sees itself as a social service provider for students and aims to improve the balance between studies and family
obligations at the Karlsruhe and Pforzheim university campuses, focusing on the needs of its students and staff. This is crucial for ensuring that students with children or caregiving responsibilities have equal opportunities to pursue their studies.

Some of the goals of the Karlsruhe Student Services Organization are:

• Expanding support services for students with children, for example through events on funding opportunities,
• A collaborative project with the Paritätischer Sozialdienst to specifically improve the living conditions of student parents,
• Intensifying cooperation within the “Studying with a Family” project group and expanding the network to foster closer ties among relevant stakeholders.

This membership is intended to highlight the importance of this work and to strengthen the promotion of a family-friendly organizational and leadership culture.
