Invitation to Participate in the Research Study on Psychological States and Gastric (stomach) activity

Tue. 28.04.2026 - Fri. 22.05.2026

We are inviting you to take part in a research study investigating how different psychological states influences gastric (stomach) activity. The study will take place between 22nd April and 1st May.

What is the study about?
This study examines how different mental states—particularly emotionally active and resting states—affect the body’s digestive system. While stress is known to influence many physiological systems, its effects on gastric activity are still not well understood.

What will you do?
If you participate, you will attend one laboratory session lasting approximately 1.5 hours, consisting of two experimental blocks. During the study, you will:

• First receive a light meal (2 bananas and a glass of orange juice)
• Watch relaxing videos
• Complete tasks including placing your hand in cold or lukewarm water (2°C / 36°C) and performing a short arithmetic task
• Rest between tasks

Each condition lasts approximately 10 minutes. Throughout the session, we will measure:

• Gastric activity using non-invasive abdominal sensors
• Heart activity using a chest strap
• Movement using small wearable sensors

Please note: Sensors will be placed on your skin.

Some tasks may be mildly challenging or induce temporary stress. These procedures are commonly used in psychological research. You may stop the experiment at any time without penalty. A researcher will be present throughout the session to ensure your safety and well-being.

Compensation
You will receive a €15 Scheck-in voucher as compensation for your time.

Who can participate?
You may be eligible if you:

Are 18 years or older male
Have a BMI between 18–26 kg/m²
You can calculate your BMI as: weight (kg) / [height (m)]².

You will not be eligible if you have:

• Cardiovascular, endocrine, or gastrointestinal disorders
• Current or past psychiatric disorders
• Substance dependence or smoking habits
• Are taking medication affecting stress, heart, or digestive systems

Preparation requirements (Important!)
Before the session, you will be asked to:

• Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs for 24 hours
• Avoid medication (unless medically necessary) for 24 hours
• Fast for at least 2 hours
• Avoid caffeine for at least 4 hours
• Avoid intense physical activity on the day of testing

Why participate?
Your participation will help advance scientific understanding of how mental states interact with the digestive system—an area that remains underexplored.
