State secretary Dr. Birk: Another key milestone for the child-friendly studies in Baden-Württemberg

„Children of students can now get free meals at the dining halls of the Studierendenwerks in the state. I am delighted with this key milestone for the child friendly universities in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Thereby, studying in Baden-Württemberg is even more attractive for students with children. It takes great power to study and take care of a child. Therefore, the state already supports the parent-students with special regulations, for example by easing the tuition fees and the examination periods.“ The state secretary Dr. Dietrich Birk said this on (this) Friday in Stuttgart at the official start of the statewide campaign with the children and students at the dining hall of the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart.

Children under age 10 are entitled now to get a free meal in the dining halls of Baden-Württemberg. There are various forms required, but the parents are informed of the procedure by the Studierendenwerks. The initiative is possible through the cooperation of the State Ministry of Baden-Württemberg, the Ministry of Science and the Studierendenwerks of Baden-Württemberg.

On behalf of the State Department, a plate and a bib with a child-oriented design has been created for the Mensa Kids campaign. The result is a "Wimmel"-theme, which shows the map of Baden-Württemberg. When a child´s dish is empty, the child can look at the tourist resorts at Bodensee and Feldberg in addition to other cities in Baden-Württemberg. The best places to explore are the TV Tower and the Ferris wheel at the Beer Festival in Stuttgart, the Gothic cathedral, the Water Tower in Mannheim, and many more. The bib can be taken home, but the plates are reused in the dining halls.

The campaign is accompanied by a poster with the slogan, "Crazy! More and more four-year-olds in universities in Baden-Württemberg!" which should create awareness about the new service in the dining halls. The aim of the campaign is to make Baden-Württemberg an economic and “child-friendly” state, so it can be a better known and more attractive place of study for young parents.
